An Analytical Guide to Television's Battlestar Galactica

When the space drama Battlestar Galactica debuted on ABC in 1978, it was expected to be the most popular new program of the year. Instead, it was attacked as a Star Wars rip-off and canceled after a mere 17 stories. The author acknowledges the show was full of dramatic clichs and scientific inaccuracies, but despite these shortcomings, Battlestar Galactica was a dramatically resonant series full of unique and individual characters, such as Commander Adama (Lorne Greene) and ace warrior Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch).

The author contends that Battlestar Galactica was a memorable attempt to make science fiction accessible to mainstream television audiences. The brilliant work of artist John Dykstra brought a new world of special effects to network television. Battlestar Galactica also skillfully exploited legends and names from both the Bible and ancient mythology, which added a layer of depth and maturity to the weekly drama.
Customer Review: Thoughtful, objective commentary
The author impressed me with his knowledge of the history of the show including the legal milieu surrounding BG and Star Wars. While I thoroughly enjoyed BG series as a very young man, I am now adult enough to accept the obvious production flaws the author exposes in his superb objective analysis of the series.

I recommend this book for those who would wish to recapture the essence of the series and further understand the importance of the SF TV genre. Buy It Now At Amazon!

Battlestar Galactica: Saga of a Star World (Battlestar Galactica (Paperback))

Before Star Trek: The Next Generation, Farscape and Stargate SG-1, there was 1980s cult TV series Battlestar Galactica: the smash-hit sci-fi show that rocked the spaceways with its legendary stories, memorable villains and awesome hair styles!

This classic comic-strip adaptation tells the story of the very first episodes of the hit TV series. After a surprise attack by battle droids, the Cylons, the human race faces extinction. Now the last remaining warship, the Battlestar Galactica, leads a ragtag refugee fleet across a savage galaxy in a desperate search for that one glimmer of hope amongst the stars — the planet Earth!
Customer Review: A Very Cool Comic for a Very Cool Show!
RE: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: SAGA OF A STAR WORLD

This is a Titan Books (UK) collection reprinting several issues of the seventies Marvel Comics adaption and continuation of the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. First of all, let me talk about the talents involved herein. The art for the theatrical movie/series pilot adaption is by Ernie Colon, a very talented artist who isn't quite a perfect fit for BSG, but he did a yeoman's job anyway. The highlight, though, is the later issues with art by the great WALTER SIMONSON, who later went on to do a absolutely legendary revamp of Marvel's THOR and later still, an ORION series for DC Comics that remains a critically acclaimed cult favorite. These stories aren't at that level, certainly, but they are a lot of fun!

The reproduction leaves a bit to be desired, however. The movie adaption seems to be reproduced from a clean source, probably from the Marvel Treasury Edition in the seventies, but the Simonson issues (which are the cream anyway) come from lesser sources. They could have looked much better. Not that this lessens the enjoyment of reading the stories, of course, but I kind of expect better from Titan after the bang-up job they did on their ALIEN LEGION collections.

But, I'll be there when the second volume, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE MEMORY MACHINE, comes out soon!

RECOMMENDED! Buy It Now At Amazon!

Customer Review: A Good Book for a General Introduction - Serious Fans May Be Disappointed
Overall this is a decent little guidebook into the world of the new Battlestar Galactica series. Most people will find a lot of good general information.

However, for serious fans, there is very little we don't already know contained in this book. Also, apparently this guide was thrown together quite hastily, and by people not that closely associated with production, because it contains many pieces of information which are in direct contradiction to statements/info/events in the show and on RDM's weekly podcasts.

Overall, meh, it could use some work. Thankfully the quality of the guide does not reflect the quality of the show. Buy It Now At Amazon!

So Say We All : Collected Thoughts and Opinions on Battlestar Galactica (Smart Pop series)

The science-fiction television series Battlestar Galactica is known for raising thought-provoking questions concerning martial law, artificial intelligence, power and corruption, and ultimately what it means to be human. What ethical complexities come into play when one mistake could mean the anihilation of the human race? How do you maintain faith in the Gods when you're involved in an Armageddon of your own creation? What is the distinction between a terrorist and a freedom fighter? These questions are given an intelligent and insightful examination in this engaging collection of essays.

Battlestar Galactica: Redemption (Battlestar Galactica)

After fleeing the planet Paradis and discovering that many of their ships were no longer capable of deep space travel, the Colonials were forced to hold a lottery to decide who in the fleet would live and who would have to stay behind and die. Apollo, Sheba, and Koran forfeit their secured place in the fleet to stay behind with 800 other Colonials who have been chosen by the people’s lottery to sacrifice their lives so that the vast majority of the fleet might have the best chance of surviving. They are surprised by the arrival of an ancient 13th Tribe space ark, which had been freed from its frozen grave deep within the bowels of Paradis by the catastrophic destruction of the planet. They discover that the huge craft is habitable and capable of sustaining all surviving colonials who were forced to stay behind.
Customer Review: It's a bit slight...
After "Paradis", "Destiny" and now "Redemption" read like combined and inflated scripts for Richard Hatch's proposed season for a new "Battlestar Galactica" sequel TV series. The problem is that they're too episodic, with too little resolution. They don't stand well as novels on their own. There's been little real plot advancement, just incidents, stuff happening, and all shortly after the post "Paradis" split of the fleet (it's telling that half the fleet doesn't actually get to its destination, while the other half stays where they were at the start of the book). With the demise of ibooks, I have to wonder if Richard Hatch will get to finish telling the meta story. It still feels undone. Buy It Now At Amazon!

The Cylons' Secret : Battlestar Galactica 2

Sometimes no news is bad news.

It’s been twenty years since the end of the Cylon war. The twelve human colony worlds are rebuilding, and the Cylons . . . the Cylons have been just too quiet. They are nowhere to be found. The robotic race that tried to obliterate their creators has gone to parts unknown in deep space.

The aftermath of the war has created a new, illegal profession: scavenger. Tom Zarek is one, scouring the outer settlements for valuable Cylon technologies and artifacts and usually returning empty-handed. But now, he and the crew of the Cruiser Lightning have found the Omega Station, a scientific station shrouded in secrecy beyond the edge of charted space. This is it, the big score, except something is wrong…the base is still occupied, not by humans alone; by Cylons too!

The Battlestar Galactica, one of the oldest warships in the fleet, receives the Lightning's distress call, a cryptic one-word message: "Cylons." William Adama, newly promoted to second-in-command, is worried. Most of his crew are green, new recruits, not prepared for anything but the most routine missions. And, as Adama soon discovers, this mission is anything but routine. Omega is indeed full of Cylons, but also something much more disturbing . . .
