Stargate Atlantis - Stargate Atlantis: The Official Companion, Season 1

Stargate Atlantis: The Official Companion, Season 1

First there was the blockbuster Stargate movie, then the smash hit TV series Stargate SG-1, and now there s the equally successful spinoff show: Stargate Atlantis!

A new Stargate team embarks on a dangerous mission to a distant galaxy, where they discover a mythical lost city and a deadly new enemy the Wraith. New characters, new planets, new alien encounters: but the same irresistible brand of Stargate adventure!

Here s the official companion to the first season, packed with behind the scenes interviews, an episode guide and scores of photos, including a 16pp colour gallery.
Customer Review: Good Stuff For Stargate Fans
One of my criteria for judging an episode guide is: Does it have anything to say about various minor recurring characters? Because typically I like them more than the main cast. So my question in reading this book was, did it find time to include an entry on Dr. Zelenka? Yes. Yes, it did. And all was right with the world.

This is a guide to the first season of "Stargate Atlantis", a spin-off, of course, to the popular "Stargate: SG-1" series. In this show, our group of heroes and heroines is stuck in the Pegasus Galaxy after a one-way transgalactic hop via a super-powered gate dial-out from the SGC on Earth. They hope to find the lost city of Atlantis, home of the long-ago-ascended Ancients, and find it they do. Unfortunately, they also discover that the Ancients bailed out of Pegasus some 10,000 years ago after accidentally creating their own nemeses in the form of the Wraith, who really enjoy treating humans as tasty lifeforce snacks. And while there are various human-settled worlds still to be found, not all of them are delighted to see the folks from Earth show up, especially once word gets around that the Stargate team sort of accidentally woke the Wraith back up way before schedule.

This book presents a brief summary of each episode of the first season, along with some minimal cast and crew notes. There's also commentary provided by cast and crew about what went on in the making of the episodes, what their original intentions had been, what worked and what didn't. There are brief character sketches of the main cast, which really have much more to do with details on the actors and how they got the roles and how they approach them.

Also included is a section on the development of the show and another on some of the departments or key players (stunts, production design) behind the scenes. A lot of photos are provided, mostly in black and white but a few publicity stills in color.

I had very low expectations for this book based on previous Stargate episode guides, but it very much exceeded them. It's not a classic of its kind nor indispensable, but if you're a keen fan of the show and you really want to know some of the details about what it takes to put together an episode, you won't be disappointed.

Stargate Atlantis: The Chosen (Stargate Atlantis) (Stargate Atlantis)

The Stargate Atlantis team encounter a society where high priests of the local cult are able to protect the society from attacks by the Wraith by using technology left behind by the Ancients. However, the genetic ability to use the weapons has faded over successive generations, leaving the people increasingly vulnerable to attack. With the Wraith growing ever bolder in their attacks, the team must decide whether to inoculate the priests with a gene therapy which will restore their abilities, and also decide whether or not to withhold the therapy from the rest of the population in order to shore up the dominance of the high priests.

Age Nitpick/Query
I just have an odd little nitpick/query that I thought that I would share *grin*:

I just don't understand the number of Atlantis fics that make a point of mentioning that Elizabeth is older than John. Unless there is some info in the show that I missed, I would assume that the actors are playing their age, or close to it? If that is the case, well Torri's only about a year older than Joe.(omg, I'm such a geek that I know that *grin*)

I only nitpick, because some of the fic make it sound like a significant age difference. I was just wondering what was up? A year is obviously not a big age difference. Is age difference a big thing in the 'ship? Are they indeed playing significantly different ages than their own? *shrug* Just me wondering about useless trivia *grin*

Omg, It's the doctor from hell!

Elizabeth realized that today was going to be filled with sighs as she sighed once more upon seeing the team s early return. Covered head to toe in mud and the majority missing essential sections of their protective gear. She tried to glare at the soldiers in the gate room who were snickering at their commanding officer and the others, but she failed, quite miserably. Seeing that Dr. Lewis was already ushering them to the infirmary, her bun as tight as ever, Elizabeth assumed that she had been waiting for them to return. The look on John s face showed great displeasure.

----==----

CANT YOU AT LEAST WARM YOU HANDS?!?!?! could be heard all the way from the transporter. CARSON! I WANT YOU TO FIRE THIS WOMAN! NOW! Rodney had become accustomed to Carson performing all the post-mission checkups. Apparently this was the first time he had encountered Dr. Lewis, he didn t know that complaining only made it funnier err, worse.

Although loud, Dr. Lewis voice showed no signs of shouting. Dr. McKay the lubricant will warm up. If you would stop clenching this will be over soon. Rodney s response was a strangled whimper that was obviously made through clenched teeth.

All of the nurses and doctors that Elizabeth could see were turning purple from trying not to laugh by holding their breath. The returning team s faces, all but Teyla and Maj. Lorne s second in command Sarah, were white lipped with fear.

John, do ye think she ll go easy on me if I give her a raise before I go in there? Elizabeth felt sorry for the man, last week this whole level heard Carson giving her a verbal reprimand for neglecting the comfort of the patients.

I won t let the scary lady hurt you buddy! Any assumption that John was unaffected went out the window at this point. But, alas, he didn t stop there. It s too late for Pookie, but you Snookie, I can save.

John s men looked at him in horror. John didn t notice; he was too busy patting Carson s hair down, only to reshape it back into its standard Mohawk like form.

Rodney exited the curtain and was led to a vacant bed, slightly limping and going from one shade of red to the next in a never ending cycle

Beckett, you re next! Bellowed from the other side of the still closed curtain. Dr. Lewis sounded like it was Christmas morning and she knew she had been a good girl.

Carson shuddered and slowly walked towards the curtain.

Ronon s face was aimed at Carson, a look of pity and mourning of a lost soldier on his features.

John was being held down by Teyla as he began to shout. You keep your abnormally large fingers out of my boyfriend s ass! Isn t it bad enough that you damaged Rodney? Teyla had to hold both his arms behind his back, she wondered briefly how to shut him up before he said in a defeated voice: Now I m not gonna fit in Rodney and Carson as snugly. I like it tight.

Elizabeth noticed one of Carson s nurses, Mary, going towards John with a Game Boy in her hand. Everyone in the room either looked away or closed their eyes tightly to keep from laughing as John graciously accepted the Game Boy. OOOOHHH!! KIRBY!!

John proceeded to jump up and down in his excitement.

There was a shriek from behind the curtain followed by Carson running out holding up his muddy pants, a look of horror on his face. Mary led him to a bed near Rodney s, but Carson ignored her and climbed next to Rodney in his bed.

Sheppard! Bellowed Dr. Lewis.

John skipped to the curtain, never taking his eyes off Kirby. Ooh! I just won 200 points!

----==----

Teyla sighed in amusement as she watched Zelenka bounce around his lab, happily taking over for Dr. McKay, after all, yelling and insulting people is a great stress reliever. Although she is amused, Teyla wishes to once again go off-world with her team. Col. Sheppard and Dr. McKay currently being held in the infirmary for detox meant she had much time to spend on the mainland with her people, but a week of being on one planet caused her to grow restless.

She could have always gone off-world with Ronon, Elizabeth would have allowed a two-person team for some missions, but Ronon was too busy sitting at Maj. Lorne s bedside. A brief memory passed through her mind of walking in on Ronon giving Lorne a sponge bath. Smirking to herself, Teyla discretely approached Radek from behind and licked his neck.

Shall we invite Elizabeth to lunch in my quarters? A single eyebrow rising as Teyla spoke. Seeing Radek s vigorous nodding, Teyla grabbed Radek and was out the door and radioing Elizabeth in 5 seconds flat.

----==----

Two weeks have passed since the return to PX-420 and there has been no change in the narcotic state of those effected by the mud.

It s as if they are still covered in it. Said Dr. Lewis. I gave them all thorough body searches, there is no mud on them.

Yes, Doctor, we were there for five of those searches. Elizabeth fought the urge to cringe at thorough . It didn t work. How could this be happening? Is the narcotic substance actually present in their blood or is it just in their heads?

The traces of the enzyme in the last tests this morning are the same as when they were first tested two weeks ago. We are trying to figure out if it is somehow being reintroduced somehow, or if it is just a build up from the last time they were there. Dr. Lewis looked unsure of her words even as she spoke them.

Teyla gently began to speak. I highly doubt it is a case of it building up in their systems. Maj. Lorne and his team, along with Dr. Beckett, have never been to PX-420 before. Therefore, they would not be going through the same detox process as Col. Sheppard and Dr. McKay. Correct? Unsure of her statement, Teyla looked to her lovers for reassurance.

Only Ronon and Dr. Heightmeyer noticed the small smiles that Elizabeth and Radek sent to Teyla.

I think Miss Emmagan is correct. It seems highly logical that they are being reintroduced to the substance somehow. Have monitoring procedures been put into effect? Hermiod spoke as he always does: like he is talking to children.

You think someone is poisoning them? Radek s expression shows how appalled he is at the notion. Who in Atlantis would do such a thing?

Well, we will just have to find out won t we? Elizabeth s voice was stern, yet her eyes were unsure.

----==----

Elizabeth sat with Teyla and Sgt. Stackhouse as they watched the infirmary footage of all seven people, eight actually, since Ronon was asleep in the chair next to Lorne s unconscious yet still giggling body. Stackhouse tried in vain to suppress his laughter every time he glanced at the screen showing Sheppard, Beckett, and McKay forming a blob of moving blanket. They were awake and doing something under the sheets.

Elizabeth, being tired of the awkward silence, decided to lighten the mood, or at least get a good laugh. At least we can t hear what they re doing.

Both Teyla and Stackhouse gave her the most incredulous stares before laughing hysterically.

The laughter died down and they saw it. Dr. Kavanagh sneaking into the infirmary with a Rubbermaid container full of mud. They watched in shock as he went to each of their beds and placed a small dab on the inside of their ankles. It looked as if he was pressing it into their skin then moving onto the next and doing the same. When he got to the last person, he went back to the first and wiped off the evidence.

Security, pick up Dr. Kavanagh on his way back to his quarters and put him into holding cell Steve . Stackhouse said into his radio, his voice full of wonder.

----==----

Dr. Kavanagh, what possessed you to drug not only your boss, but the Commanding Military officer, Chief Medical Officer, and four soldiers? Rage flowed through Elizabeth. It would be pointless to say she was a bit pissed, wouldn t it?

I, umm, its none of your business. Kavanagh said, being difficult as usual, sticking his nose in the air.

I think the reason for your treason is the business of everyone in this room. Insisted Col. Cadwell.

Lowering his head and speaking quieter than a whisper, Kavanagh spoke. Miko.

Elizabeth s eyebrows shot to her forehead. One thought ran through her mind: What the Fuck? What the fuck? She hadn t meant to say it, but no one objected, they were wondering the same.

Dr. Kavanagh spoke louder this time; When McKay is there, she is always at his heels, waiting for something brilliant . When Zelenka is in charge and McKay s gone, she, sometimes looks at me. Kavanagh is smiling now. She pretends she s looking at the whiteboard, but I know she s looking at me.

You one sick fuck. Everyone turned to look at Radek, but Radek being mini-fuzzy-McKay didn t even notice. She not looking at you, shit for brain, she looking at equations on WHITEBOARD! You make Rodney high so that I can be in charge of incompetent people just so you can molest Dr. Miko with your beady little eyes?!

Teyla arched a puzzled eyebrow as Radek stormed out of Steve s room screaming in Czech.

Summary: Stop touching Ancient artifacts you don't know. It could send your life in a whole different direction...
Notes: This is an AU of the RP we're in. Which is an AU of SGA in that Rodney, John, Carson and Radek are together and late season 2 add Rae to the mix. All you need to know is that they're married and live together. Rodney had a stroke recently in the RP so that's why he can't have coffee and there's been stress between Carson and Rae lately, but it looks like it's on it's way to resolving. Rae and Rodney have a thing, a joke, really, where they call each other Shenzi (Rae) and Banzai (Rodney) after two of the hyenas in The Lion King.

I think that's everything you need to know. Oh yeah. Dora and Andy were given to Rodney by Rae when she built a ZPM and gave the instructions to Earth. He named them after Duranda (except I can't spell so got Doranda) and thinks no one knows. Andy's playful, Dora's more reserved. She also has the gene, but that's not info needed right now.

Stargate Atlantis: Rising (Stargate (Stargate) Atlantis) (Stargate Atlantis)

Stargate Atlantis: Rising (Stargate Atlantis) (Stargate Atlantis)

Atlantis will rise again

Following the discovery of an Ancient outpost buried deep in the Antarctic ice sheet, Stargate Command sends a new team of explorers through the Stargate to the distant Pegasus galaxy.

Emerging in an abandoned Ancient city, the team quickly confirms that they have found the Lost City of Atlantis. But, submerged beneath the sea on an alien planet, the city is in danger of catastrophic flooding unless it is raised to the surface. Things go from bad to worse when the team must confront a new enemy known as the Wraith who are bent on destroying Atlantis.

Stargate Atlantis is the exciting new spin-off of the hit TV show, Stargate SG-1. Based on the script of the pilot episode, Rising is a must-read for all fans and includes deleted scenes and dialog not seen on TV with photos from the pilot episode.
Customer Review: A fun read
I love Stargate Altantis, the show is smart and fun. The novelization of the pilot "Rising" is just the same. There are wonderful "inside their heads" moments for almost every character. This book is a quick, fun read, with lovely color photos in the center of the book.
The book is true to the script, which means that certain scenes are played out in a slightly different order than you see them in the aired pilot. Some lines are spoken by different people so that might be a little jarring if you've watched it as many times as I have. There are a few very good scenes that are not in the show that are in this book that I really liked.

So if you like novelizations, I hightly recommend this one. If you've never read one, this would be a good one to get. And if you've never seen SG-Atlantis, who knows, it might peek your interest in a really well made show.
Customer Review: Really enjoying this novelization!
I am currently reading Sally Malcolm's novelization of the Stargate Atlantis pilot episode, "Rising". I am a huge fan of this show and, therefore, very particular about the way the characters are portrayed in stories. I am finding that Ms. Malcolm has a very good grasp of the characters from the show. She writes them well and has, as far as I've read, kept the characters true to the premise of the tv show. She also has added some wonderful insights into the characters that would help explain the story to those readers who are not as familiar with the tv show. I would definitely recommend this book and I also hope that Sally Malcolm will write more Atlantis novels!

Stargate Atlantis: The Official Companion, Season 1 (Stargate)

Something you never want to do...
So... I was browsing AFF.N because I was bored and needed a good laugh. After reviewing a Historical Fiction author's PWP to tell him/her/it that Achilles is not a god, I stumbled upon an incestrape fic. I found there what is possibly one of the best typos ever.

I kneed you, Kayla, I said hoarsely in her ear. I need to fuck you, to take advantage of you, to just feel you.

Then he goes on to say that he made her feel him up and "enjoy it". How do you make someone enjoy something? If I recall correctly, no rape victim ever enjoys any part of rape. But then again, this is AFF, so I really shouldn't be surprised.

Stargate - New Fic: They Are Wraith by Liondragon

New Fic: They Are Wraith by Liondragon

Title: They Are Wraith [light format]
Author: Liondragon ([info]shusu)
Content: 1506 words, bit of John/Rodney, R rating
Thanks: [info]lrodell, [info]advent_atlantis for encouragement
Warnings: season two spoilers, consonance, alliteration, Watsonian explanation, canon symmetry, fanon relations

Summary: How could they be so stupid.

A 2x20 "Allies" response-by-fanfic. A null hypothesis of sorts -- if this didn't happen, then the groupthink was their own fault. (But we still love them.) Also the Wraith are clever and devious. (But we still love them.)

Meta discussion is welcomed.

my season three wishlist?
Gosh, everyone has already posted such comprehensive lists, what can I possibly add?

More Atlantis. As in the city. I mean, there's this huge city and they are hunkered down in like 1% of it. You just know someone has to be exploring. Where are the libraries and coffee shops and sex toy stores? I want to SEE it!

I think a "Day in the Life" piece would be nice. Or maybe a day seen from the POV of a secondary character.

More Zelenka.

It's probably too much to ask for some nekkid butts. But there is precedent (beyond the actors own past roles...) like Firefly and BSG and SG1. I demand butt parity. *g*

I love the humor, what other show would advertise its star as an "intergalactic babe magnet", I ask you?. I think they have a nice touch with the humor, too much and it would be overdone.

What I'd REALLY like is for the season to have twice as many episodes, instead of that annoying series of new episodes alternated with repeats.

*throws in hat*
What I'd like to see in S3?

Well, a lot of people have said it as well, Teyla and Elizabeth doing a little more together. Preferably them saving either themselves or everyone else without help from any of the guys.

Elizabeth and Ronon having to interact with each other for some reason. Hopefully with humor.

Mostly: elevator episode. I know, I'm slightly weird, but my favorite episodes of shows often turn out to be the elevator episodes because they focus much more on characters and give us a lot to work with as fans.
